Math: This week we worked a lot with rounding numbers both to the nearest 10 as well as the nearest 100. We also learned some addition strategies for adding 3 or more digit numbers together. In Number Corner, we are continuing to work with fractions and elapsed time. We have also really enjoyed playing “Prodigy” on the Chromebooks during our Tech Lab time. It is a fun way that we can review concepts learned in class as well as learn new advanced concepts. The children all have passcodes and can play this at home for free on play.prodigygame.com.
Language Arts: We have begun learning about the features of Nonfiction Texts and we are making our own books of these features. We are learning that nonfiction features (i.e. captions and labels) help us to better understand the text we are reading. We also wrapped up our grammar unit on nouns and took a quiz.
Writing: We have begun our unit on opinion writing. We began this week by choosing topics to write about and creating a list. We then chose one of the topics that we had an opinion about and sketched out our paragraphs on a planning sheet called a “Four Square.” Once we had our planning sheet done, we began writing our five paragraph opinion piece. Our goal as we go through this unit, is to write a five paragraph essay with paragraphs that have extra details, transition words, and tell of a complete thought. In addition to Opinion Writing, we began to learn cursive. The kids were very excited!
Religion: We began our unit on the Apostles’ Creed by starting with learning about the Trinity. We have found that it is a difficult concept that God is 3 Persons in one. We enjoyed watching a video on the Trinity, as well as dancing & singing to the “Trinity Song.” This week we also went to Mass to celebrate the Epiphany. Before going to Mass, we learned about the Epiphany by watching another fun video and also through a great discussion. Ask your child to tell you about the Trinity as well as the Epiphany.
