Class News

Sebtember 24, 2018

*I have been asked by the Kids Newspaper if they can interview 9 of my students about the topic of money.  This is happening on September 26th and each child interviewed will have a comment published.  She will take a photo and their first name will be published.  Please let me know by responding to this email if you do not want your child interviewed.  If we have more than 9 kids interested in being interviewed, I will draw names out of a hat to be fair.

Curricular Information:

Math:  We continued to look at different strategies on the addition table and the subtraction table.  We also reviewed the expanded form of numbers.  We have been learning how to take notes in our math journals on the work we do together.  In addition, we learned a fun addition card game that you can actually use any deck of cards to play.  Ask your child how to play!  J

Reading:  Mrs. Manfred continued assessing students individually on their reading.  We have also been reading as a class, books on friendship, community, and kindness.

Social Studies:  We began our study of maps by reading the book, “Me on the Map.”  We then drew our own maps of our rooms at homes.  Slowly, we are adding parts to those maps, including a legend.

Religion:  We dove back into the Old Testament again and learned about how God spoke to people like Abraham, Sarah, Ruth, and Naomi just like He talks to us today.  We discussed how we use prayer to talk to God.

Writing:  We continued writing personal narratives this week.  We studied the author, Karen Hesse, with her book “Come On, Rain!”  We discovered that she paints pictures with words for her readers just as artists paint pictures with a paintbrush.  We tried to paint pictures with words as we wrote this week.

Science:  We did our first Science experiment!  We researched our question, “What happens when water falls on different surfaces?”  We used eye droppers to drop water on different materials and we wrote our observations.  We also answered our research question in our Science journals.  In addition, we discussed new vocabulary in this experiment and created a class “Cognitive Content Dictionary.”
