Second Grade “St. Al’s Superheroes”

The second graders have been creating St. Al’s Superhero Self-Portraits using the simple shapes, bold outlines, and bright colors that are the features of “comic book” style.  We compared and contrasted the stylistic features of a Rubens portrait (realism) and a Roy Lichtenstein work (pop art), created over 300 years apart.  We then created our self-portraits in the comic book, superhero style, but showed our true “super strengths,” like kindness, caring, good sportsmanship, and helping.  We are so blessed to have so many true superheroes in our midst!

I am St. Aloysius School's art teacher for grades K-8. It is a joy to bring art instruction to our students.
