Third Grade Artist’s Study: Mary Cassatt-inspired Chalk Pastel Portraits

Cylee

Mrs. McLane’s third graders have been hard at work studying the medium of chalk pastels, and focusing on the artwork of the American Impressionist, Mary Cassatt.  They watched a short video about her life and work, and practiced blending chalks to create life-like skin tones.  Since Mary Cassatt is best-known for her pastel portraits of mothers and children, many third-graders brought in baby pictures to re-create in pastel.  Other students made self portraits using free-standing mirrors. Look for their efforts to be coming home this week!

I am St. Aloysius School's art teacher for grades K-8. It is a joy to bring art instruction to our students.
