Sept. 19-23

Fall is on the way and we are underway in the MAC class!

We are working on respect and responsibility which are two of our school learning expectations. We are also working on our stamina and urgency (during our work time we need to do our work) to help us learn independence and focus. Please remind your child to make sure that they are working on these skills and that it is important! thanks

Homework: Homework goes home on Monday and is due any day during the week. I need all homework and Red Folder by Friday. Right now I have a short math and short language art paper for each grade level. It is my expectation that reading will be done at least 20 min. Mon-Thur. I do not have a sheet to sign. All students need to be reading at home regularly. Spending the time really does pay off! Next week I will be sending home the list of spelling words for the year. These are words that need to be spelled correctly in daily writing. I only give 2 tests a year, one in January and one May. I will send the words home and will post them on the class webpage. If they master the words, they can write sentences or stories containing words. FIRST grade only will have word lists coming home next Monday as well. Words need to be read and parents sign off. There will be 7 lists. If they words are too easy please have your child write the words in complete sentences on lined paper. When list 1 is completed please send it in for list 2 and so on….

Blessings under the Bridge: This is an outreach to the homeless and poor in Spokane. Our school has 10 spaces to volunteer every 2nd and 4th Wed. of the month. Please contact me if you are interested in volunteering the 28th of September. Children are encouraged to attend with an adult.

In math we are beginning story problems. We have also started Mad Minute for math fluency. Students may bring home papers to practice at any time. In religion we are learning about Saint Mother Teresa. In writer’s workshop we are beginning to look at mentor texts to help us come up with ideas and how to make people move and talk in our stories.

I will be gone on Tuesday for a science meeting.

Conversations starters:

What is the name of the class chapter book? What happened in the talent show?

What math tubs are available? Which one do you like best?

What is stamina? When do you use it in the classroom?

Where do you choose to go during Daily 5?

Have a great week,

Pat Mills
